Editorial Policy
How the Phytality Knowledge Centre produces, reviews, and maintains its content.
Who Writes Our Content
All Knowledge Centre articles are written by Cara Hayes, who holds a Master of Science and Master of Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Sydney. Cara writes from a vendor perspective: Phytality manufactures the products discussed, and this commercial relationship is disclosed in every article.
How We Handle Health Claims
Every health claim in the Knowledge Centre is classified into one of five evidence levels:
- Category-level fact: Established nutrition science that does not require citation (e.g., "DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid").
- Ingredient-level fact: Species or compound-specific, verifiable from published research (e.g., "Nannochloropsis produces EPA in polar lipid form").
- Product-specific fact: Data from Phytality's own products, verified against certificates of analysis.
- EFSA-authorised health claim: Claims authorised under Commission Regulation (EU) No 432/2012, cited with the required intake conditions.
- Editorial comparison: Our own assessment, framed with language such as "in our assessment" or "from a manufacturer's perspective."
Claims that are not EFSA-authorised are not presented as health benefits, regardless of how commonly they appear in supplement marketing. Where we encounter widely used claims that lack authorisation (such as "detoxifies your body" or "boosts the immune system"), we explain why we do not make them.
Sources and Fact-Checking
Every article includes a Sources section listing the academic references that support its key claims. Sources are drawn from PubMed-indexed peer-reviewed papers, EFSA Scientific Opinions, and EU regulatory documents. We do not cite preprints, blog posts, or news articles as evidence for health claims.
Quantitative claims (dosages, nutrient concentrations, intake thresholds) are verified against primary sources before publication. Where we cannot verify a claim to our satisfaction, we either qualify it or remove it.
Commercial Interest Disclosure
Every article includes a Methodology and Disclosure section that states:
- Which Phytality products are relevant to the article's topic
- What commercial interest Phytality has in the comparison or assessment
- What data sources the article draws from
- What the article's limitations are
We do not claim independent editorial status. The Knowledge Centre is operated by a supplement manufacturer. We believe transparency about this relationship is more useful to readers than pretending it does not exist.
Corrections and Updates
Articles include a "Last reviewed" date. We review articles periodically and update them when regulations change, new research is published, or errors are identified. If you believe an article contains an error, please contact us at support@phytality.co.uk.
